Thanks for your community spirit

The success of the recent Puffin Festival in Amble was due to the unstinting work carried out by the Town Team, who gave their time and effort to make this work for the community, I cannot thank them enough.

However nothing takes away the fact that others gave in equal measure, there are far too many individuals and organisations to single out, but our thanks go to you all, whether individuals, local groups or community organisations. It took a team effort to bring it all together and once again you showed true Amble spirit and commitment.

Speaking on behalf of the community: let’s make it even better next year. Thank you all once again.

Help for guide dogs

I am appealing to everyone to save their used postage stamps for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. Last year I collected over a million used postage stamps, which have gone to help the Guide Dogs which is a great cause.

This year I want to do better by asking you again for your help in saving your used stamps. I also now collect jewellery, books, cds, dvds, postcards, and telephone/tea/cigarette cards. As well as old mobile phones and old English/foreign coins.

All of these items can raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind and help people and children to have a better life.

Disabled people against cuts (DPAC)

As a severely disabled person needing assistance with all my personal and social care, the Independent Living Fund (ILF) is a vital part of my financial support. This funding will finish in 2015 leaving me a great shortfall in my care package which my council may not be able to meet due to their cutbacks.
As a result I will be sitting in my home all day without my much loved dogs Jack and Molly as they will need to be rehomed because I will not be able to take them out.
To help us to get the word out about the closure of the ILF, I urge everybody to contact their MP to say that they are against the cuts because of the impact on all disabled people.
I never thought that I would have to beg for the support I need but that is what I am doing. Please support disabled people by contacting your MP and by going to the DPAC website http://dpac.uk.net to see how they can help us in this vital fight.

Finding Julie Cowan

Hello my name is Pauline Lisle (maiden name Gukis), and I wondered if any of your readers could help me to trace an old school friend.  Her name was Julie Cowan, but unfortunately I don’t know of her married name.  We lost contact after leaving school.  I left the Duchess School in 1976 but Julie stayed on, and I did know she went to live in Manchester. Julie’s parents were both teachers. Mr Jim Cowan taught at Amble Modern School, and her Mum taught at Warkworth school.  If anyone can help me to get in touch with her I would be very grateful.

Can you help Michael help us?
I am a totally blind 25 year old who is a voluntary member of the editorial team here at The Ambler. Readers might already be aware of my name as I have sent in articles on my own experiences of the town and the local ambience. I am writing to enquire if someone would assist me with proof reading contributions and adverts which is my main role. I am beginning to realise skimming and scanning of material is considerably slower for me than my sighted counterparts. As a consequence I am not getting through as much as I could be. I would benefit from extra input so I can complete tasks quicker.
I generally attend The Ambler twice a week on a Tuesday and a Thursday afternoon, usually between 13:00 and 16:00. If any of these times work then could you contact the Development Trust on 01665 712929 to discuss possible arrangements.

Request for old photographs
I am a former Amble resident and I am looking for photographs of my old home on the corner of Henderson Street and Leazes Street. The property was demolished along with other buildings and the railway line to make way for the modern properties.

Coastal erosion
What an excellent website and pretty town.  I am thinking of moving to the area from Lincolnshire and have tried to track down info regarding coastal erosion and its impact on Amble.  I would like to ideally purchase a house with  a seaview but I am not sure that I would not be better slightly further inland.  Any info would be gratefully received. Thank you

Poppy appeal fundraising dinner
At the annual fundraising Dinner/ Dance held on 1 June, in the Sun Hotel, Warkworth a total of £655 was raised for the Poppy Appeal.
The Branch would like to thank Alnwick Playhouse musicians who entertained us, local businesses and members who donated raffle and auction prizes, including the Duchess of Northumberland, our Royal British Legion Northumbria Patron. Chairman Jeff Watson thanked everyone for supporting the Royal British Legion, who provide direct practical help, advice and welfare to the serving and ex service community. Our Armed Forces experience casualties almost every week. The Legion also wholly maintains the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to preserve the memory of those who have given their lives in the service of their country.  So please support the Poppy Appeal.
Special thanks for prizes go to the Duchess of Northumberland, Hermitage Inn, Post Office, Masons Arms, Cabosse, the Greenhouse, The Sun Hotel, Warkworth House Hotel, all of Warkworth and in Amble the Co-op and Harbour Fish Bar, Morrisons and The Oaks in Alnwick, Running Fox Felton, Cartshed Acklington, DLI Museum Durham, Bowes Museum Barnard Castle and our members who so kindly donated items to sell and auction.
