Town council organises WW1 remembrance

Throughout Europe events will take place during 2014-2018 to mark this occasion; to remember with thanks all those who gave their lives for their country as well as those who fought alongside them but returned. Although we now have no-one left alive in this country who served in WW1 many of us still take time to reflect on all they did for us, especially on Remembrance Sunday.
Most of the events will centre around the outbreak of war in August 1914 and the Armistice in November 1918, but in particular will also remember the campaigns of Gallipoli, April 2015, Somme, July 2016, Jutland, May 2016 and Passchendaele, June 2017.
The town council is planning a ceremony in Amble West cemetery on Saturday, August 2nd, 2014 and would like to trace descendants of the nine people laid to rest in the cemetery, so that a young member of their own family can place a poppy posy by their headstone.

Thomas Clancey, born at Portland, served with the Welsh Regiment, died 7th April 1915
Robert Nicholson, born at Hauxley, served with the Northumberland Fusiliers, died 24th December 1916
Watson Cavers, served with the Northumberland Fusiliers, died 2nd January 1917
James Dixon, born at Alnwick, served with the Durham Light Infantry, died 30th August 1917
John Douglas, born at Tanfield, served with the Durham Light Infantry, died 9th July 1918
John Edward Straughan, served with the Northumberland Fusiliers, died 18th November 1918
John George Wade, born at Shildon, served with the Northumberland Fusiliers, died 12th June 1919
Joseph F. Angus, born at Amble, served with the Royal Army Service Corps, died 19th February 1920
Ralph Scott, served with the Northumberland Fusiliers, died 25th April 1920
We are also interested in collating as much information as possible on any men who served in WW1 who came from this locality. If enough details/stories/histories are forthcoming, they may be compiled into a booklet for all to see as so much is lost when it is not recorded.
