JCSC activities at Once-Brewed
A group of JCSC students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were invited to attend a “Gifted and Talented” team building weekend at Once-Brewed Youth Hostel near Hexham.
Our day started with some activities that allowed us to get to know everyone. The tasks made everyone laugh, so by the end we were all friends and having a good time. The point-earning activities got a little competitive at times! We started out by making hats, for which we were judged as a team, as in the other activities. This was quite difficult as we are used to being judged just on our own efforts.
On the second day, we walked by the side of Hadrian’s Wall. It was looking like a good day for a walk, and it was…. at least until it started to rain! We walked roughly eight miles, up and down hills that were extremely steep! After five hours of aching legs and complaining about the weather we finally reached a fort where we tried out the roman measuring system. That evening we did a quiz covering all that we had done over the past two days to see if we’d actually been paying attention!
On our final day we built towers out of newspaper to make sure our tower was the strongest. All of this effort was in vain however because the rain kept making the paper go soggy! Then we travelled to the nearest town and working in teams, armed with a clip board and clues we orienteered our way around the town. This involved a lot of running and getting strange looks from the locals.
Back at the youth hostel, the points were added up to find out the final team scores. Winners were given framed pictures of Hadrian’s Wall to remember the trip and the best team mates of each team were also given a prize.
Just as we headed back to the mini buses we were hit yet again with the annoying weather when hail stones sent us running for cover! Over all we had fun despite the weather and were left with great memories. Thank you to all the staff who helped us over the weekend.
