Brenda looks forward to seeing the torch again
When the Olympic torch passes through Amble, it will light up memories for 80 year old Brenda Rollo of Church Street. The last time she saw the torch being carried was in 1948, in Windsor.
Brenda was 17 at the time, on holiday in London with her family and a school friend. They went to Windsor for the day and were wondering why crowds were gathering outside the café where they were having lunch.
“Somebody told us the torch was coming through,” she said. “I had to stand on a chair to see over the heads of the folk outside and I got a view of a man running with it. It was great. I think it was June and a warm, sunny day.”
Brenda’s late husband, Kit, was mayor of Amble and they are both well-known in the town. Brenda now has three great grandchildren.
When she heard that the torch was coming through Amble she hoped it would pass her house in Church Street, but even though she finds walking difficult now, she is still determined to see it being carried through her home town.
Does she have any views on the games? “I know it’s all costing a lot of money,” she said, “but I do wish good luck to those taking part.”
