Looing for Amble’s Billy Elliotts
Working closely with Hilary Durie, Head of Faculty at James Calvert Spence College, Martin Hylton, Development Coordinator of Dance City organised a new dance project just for boys.
It was created primarily to target and engage boys in contemporary dance, although girls were able to participate.
The workshops were held over three days, starting on Tuesday February 22 at JCSC South Avenue where the school hall has a proper wooden sprung floor and provided a perfect base for the activity.
“Young men across all year groups expressed an interest in the project”, said Mrs Durie, responsible for Creative and Performing Arts at JCSC, “At the moment there is a big group of 6th formers, 21 in all and I kept them together for the Thursday workshop, the year 9, 10 and 11s are a group of 23 and the third day was open to boys from years 7 and 8. This was an exciting and innovative opportunity for everyone, but most importantly the male students, who are proving to be very open-minded and interested in the idea.”
