Garden plots available

Posted on 18th October 2011 | in Community , Heritage & Tourism

Walking through the West Allotments you may have noticed the gardening project set up by Morpeth Disability Association. The project was intended to provide accessible gardening for people in Amble with disabilities. Raised beds, a polytunnel, compost bins and sheds were provided, and there is access to mains water. Unfortunately CMDA is unable to continue with the scheme because of recent funding cuts.

Amble Allotment Holders’ Society has agreed to take over management of the site, with support from Amble Town Council, which owns the land. The Society would like to use it for the purpose for which it was originally intended: to help people who would like to take on, or continue with allotment gardening, but whose health or fitness level prevents this. It should be noted that although the raised beds eliminate much of the hard work and bending normally required for gardening, the scheme may not be suitable for everyone. Access from The Wynd or West Avenue is via a steep, unsurfaced track, and using the site itself requires a reasonable level of mobility.

Anyone living in Amble is invited to apply for a vacant bed. This includes people who already have an allotment that they would like to ‘swap’ or whose name is on the waiting list for one. Priority will be given to those who would have been offered a bed under the original scheme. However, if it is not possible to allocate all the beds in this way, the remainder will be offered to those who have their names on the waiting list for an allotment as a stop-gap until a full allotment is available.  An annual charge will be made to cover the costs to Amble Allotment Holders’ Society, although this will be substantially less than for a full allotment. Plot holders will become full members of AAHS.

If you’d like further information or details on how to apply please contact the Secretary on (01665)711797.
