Children and animals will steal show

A big push by organisers of the annual village show to get youngsters more involved in arts, crafts and horticultural activities looks to be paying dividends.
And, following the success of the inaugural ‘Fun Dog Show’ at last year’s 139th Warkworth Show, the event is being repeated.
The show committee recently donated garden tools and a mini greenhouse to the village first and pre-schools to help with the children’s gardening activities.
And the show on Saturday August 20 will have 64 junior classes covering activities such as model making using recycled materials, cooking, photography, needlework, handwriting and, of course, gardening.
The day’s programme also includes a children’s fancy dress competition, face painting and a magician.
For the second year running, canines of all shapes and sizes will be on parade for the Fun Dog Show where judges will be looking for the ‘prettiest bitch’, ‘handsomest dog’, ‘golden oldie’, ‘best rescued’ and ‘best in show’. And there will be a gun dog demonstration by Bob Jackson and a dog scurry.
A new feature of the show will be an exhibition of artwork organised by art teacher and show vice-chairman Jill Piddock. Several local artists – including Jill – will be exhibiting their work in the keep and in niches around the castle. Most of the exhibitors, who include a glass artist, photographers and painters, will be on hand to talk about their work.
As well as the displays of flowers, fruits, vegetables, preserves, cookery – including a special ‘baking disaster’ category – handicrafts, art, poetry and photography, the 140th Warkworth Show will also feature a wide range of entertaining activities.
There will be the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band, young dancers and the increasingly popular 2.5km fun run sponsored by Gray’s of Warkworth.
The castle and show will be open from 10am and the main exhibition marquee from 12.30pm. Admission is £5 adults, concessions £4, five to16-year-olds £2.50, family ticket £12, under fives and English Heritage members free.
