JCSC year 12 pupils win awards
Enterprisng pupils at James Calvert Spence College have won awards in two recent competitions.
At the Northumberland Learning Enterprise Network school company challenge a team from JCSC won a prestigious Student Business Finalists award.
Ryan Lazenby, Liam Stevens, Laura Waddell, Jenny Grey, Gemma Henderson and Lois Beauchamp presented their business ideas to the panel. As a committee, they had agreed to set up a business to run fundraising events.
‘The students organised events including, coffee mornings, cupcake sales, a soup kitchen, a sponsored walk and even auctioning off the old school sign, Coquet High School’, said Business Studies teacher Mrs Rachel Parks.
‘The whole experience has been both rewarding and educational and they should be proud of how much they have achieved and raised. They started with £5 and turned it into a donation of £823 for Grace House Hospice.” she said.
In the Rotary Club of Hexham 2011 Young Designer of the Year competion held at the Discovery Museum the team of Nicole Chamberlain, Ellie Davison-Archer, Danielle Carr and James Fender took first place in the Speed Curator Challenge, each receiving £25.
The school also won second place in this category. Nicole Chamberlain took second prize in the Young Designer and Technologist category, winning £100. Danielle Car came third and received £50. The school came second in the best entry section and was awarded £200.
‘The students and staff involved all had a very rewarding and enlightening experience sharing good practice and allowing the students to see where a career in design and technology could lead them’, said Design Technology teacher David Coils.
Referring to the Speed curator session, Sarah Cotton Keeper of the contemporary collection said, “Every aspect was discussed, it was excellent”.
