The head of James Calvert Spence College is leaving at the end of summer term, as the school now looks to restructure.

Executive Headteacher Neil Rodgers described “significant staffing changes due to a number of co-inciding events” in a letter to parents and carers.

In recent weeks the school has advertised for several new staff, including an Assistant Headteacher, a Director of English, a Director of Maths, a Teacher of Maths, a Head of Behaviour and Pastoral, a Second in Humanities & Modern Foreign Languages, and is introducing a new post, Leader of Personal Development & Character Education.

The role of Deputy Headteacher will replace the previous Head of School.

Neil Rodgers said “After the best part of nine amazing years at JCSC I’ve decided the time is right for me to pass on the baton and I am moving to a school in Gateshead from September. It’s not been an easy decision, but I think now is a good time for me to take on a fresh challenge and it’s also a good time for the school to have a new headteacher.”

The past few years have seen several significant changes for children attending JCSC; in September 2022 Northumberland County Council (NCC) agreed to restructure schools in the Coquet Federation from three tier to two tier.

In November 2023, plans for a new building to house the Secondary school were agreed. Plans also included alterations to the building on South Avenue which is to house the Primary children and provide additional Special Educational Needs space for Barndale school, to be known as Barndale By The Sea.

Neil added, “I am confident that the post of headteacher at JCSC will attract a very competitive field – whoever my replacement is will take over a good school with superb students and amazing staff team, moving into an exciting new phase with a new building.”
