Corona Diary: Day 05
The diary of a student who is no longer in school, following what this new virus means for us.
It was the nicest day of the year so far today: the sun was shining, it was beautifully warm and there wasn’t a cloud in sight. We sat in the garden for hours, ignoring the fact that there was nowhere else to go in this lovely weather.
Usually on a day like today, we would’ve gone for a walk, or even down to the beach, but we had to make do with mowing the lawn and tidying up the rest of the garden- and we were grateful to be able to do even that. I don’t know how people without an outdoor space will cope. It was also hard to not be able to go out for a walk without being scared of going near people, but there were several solutions to what would’ve otherwise been a lack of exercise: in the morning we did Joe Wicks’ workout and in the afternoon me and my sister did an hour of Just Dance.
There seems to be indoor solutions for almost everything now thanks to both technology and people’s generosity following the outbreak. However, there are some things that are totally stopped because of the new measures, and for a lot of people that’s their job.
My dad’s self-employed and he does a lot of work in schools, which isn’t the best place to work right now. Unlike with our exercise, there isn’t a simple alternative solution, although he has managed to find a way to make money whilst he can’t do what he usually does: he’s become a milkman. Doing shifts at night isn’t ideal, but it’s a way to make money and do something useful in a chaotic time.
Obviously this isn’t possible for everyone. For some people money will be a huge problem whilst we’re in lock down and this means that a lot of people are already going to work when they should be staying at home. Our family is lucky. I just hope that everyone else will be able to both stay at home and make a living.
