The Colony: rain fails to dampen a brilliant day
It wouldn’t be a proper music festival without a bit of rain, and so it proved at this year’s Colony. Crowds at the popular music event on Amble’s Little Shore saw a great line-up of local bands, and many came prepared with umbrellas and tents in order to escape the occasional deluge. But the weather couldn’t dampen the overwhelming enthusiasm for the event, and by tea-time when the sun came out, the party atmosphere really kicked in.

Stephen Lambert was there with his friends and family for the third year running. He said: “It was great, I think the weather just added to the whole festival feel.”
Organisers were very happy with the event, after concerns earlier in the year that it might not go ahead. Sponsors Castle North Plumbing and Heating, Coquet Island Shellfish, Heineken, Amble Crotchet Club, and Warkworth Harbour Commissioners, came to the rescue, which meant that preparations for the Colony could begin.
“It was hard work but very rewarding.” said organiser Ian Littlefear. “We can’t thank the sponsors enough.” He also thanked the crowdfunders who raised £190, and the Bede Street Club who donated £50.
Performers Six Card Trick, Deadbeat, The Odels, Prism, Britpop Union, Back in the Saddle, Brian English, and Ethan ‘Slips’ Iredale entertained the crowds over the course of the day. Children’s entertainment and vendors added to the festival fun.
Charlene Allan another of the festival organisers told The Ambler; “Despite the downpours, the people of Amble and surrounding areas and the tourists came out and supported us again. We even had a couple from New Jersey who came along, they were staying in Bedlington for the week . Everyone enjoyed themselves, more so when the sun came out, though there were some great scenes of everyone dancing in the rain!
“It was another great year with a mix of bands of all genres. Everyone all pulled together when it rained and kept the music going, it was fantastic and it was a pleasure to organise with the rest of the team. Now to start planning next year!”

Came along with my family, for the first time this year, to see Six Card Trick playing. Very glad we brought the tent, but no amount of rain could dampen the fabulous atmosphere. Cracking day of musical entertainment – well done to everyone involved- will be back next year!
