The Cantina is an annual celebration of songwriters, rockabilly, folk, country, western swing and roots-driven music that is one of the highlight’s in the Jumpin’ Hot Club calendar. Returning for a third time, Sat August 11th 2018, here’s the lowdown
Our highlight of the Summer – Out on its own, & fund free in the Northumbrland countryside but not too far from the city. This totally unique event in the awesome Acklington village hall hosts the live music & we have the garden outside for picnics & food & chill. La Fiesta the wonderful foodie stall people will be bringing all this lot along to the Cantina…..
good old country fayre, with Burritos and a BBQ. Lots of Vegan and Veggie Stuff, plus delicious cakes, coffee & light snacks.
Hadrian Border Brewery will be supplying the beers & we might have a gin bar.
The bar area will have the dansette playing rootsy 78 rpm records & Stagger Lee will be playing country in between sets in the main hall
Tickets are priced like a normal venue show for the whole dayer & its limited. So no reason whatsoever not to purchase as soon as possible

From Southern California, the all harmonies & country rock awesome’ness of the quartet ” I See Hawks In LA” will start the Cantina off with a classic country bang. Were pleased to announce the hottest act on Boston USA’s Country Folk-roots music scene,Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards will be here too (Violin girl Laura & cellist Valerie, fiddler Jenna & bassist Natalie).
Then are very proud to say that acclaimed songsmith Martin Stephenson is going to do a special one -off solo set (just for the Cantina). His patter & tunes will be eagerly anticipated by everyone Im sure…
One of the UK’s premier young Rockabilly /RNR Band’s Howlin Ric & The Rocketeers will finish the evening off even as debutant’s to this wonderful music extravaganza.
We will have our famous afternoon songwriters circle with artists from around the globe:- From Norwich Jess Morgan & Scotland Al Shields. Leeds Serious Sam Barrett & deservedly just added Elaine Palmer from North Denby.
Shipcote & Friends who have just played the acclaimed Red Rooster Fest will play a little early afternoon set of their very own acoustic northern swing tunes. & Calico Bonnet (the young female guitar/fiddle duo) will debut some old time country too
Finally our friend of the Jumpin Hot Club, the slide guitar man from down the road in Amble, Johnny Dickinson said that if he’s up to it, he’ll come & do a very rare set. A teatime space awaits him

Laura Cortese has a vision for her band’s sound: bold and elegant, schooled in the lyrical rituals of folk roots music and backed by grooves that alternately inspire Cajun two-stepping and rock-n-roll hip swagger. It’s appropriate then that the quartet, call themselves Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards. Cutting her teeth as a sideman in Boston’s roots music scene, Laura Cortese forged a unique path through a pool rich in talent including stints as an instrumentalist with Band of Horses & Pete Seeger & Uncle Earl. Laura & the Dance Cards – Valerie Thompson (cello), Jenna Moynihan (fiddle) and Natalie Bohrn (bass) break new ground with bold and elegant roots music but exploring new territories of rhythm and sonics. Martin Stephenson
We all know & love our local songsmith Martin Stephenson who’s based in the Highlands. It’s very rare he actually plays a real proper solo show highlighting his three decades of outstanding songs & musicianship and all his Daintees classic tunes. He certainly deserves it. So, at our Country Cantina this year he’ll just be UP CLOSE & PERSONAL. (& the craic as always, will be enlightening)
Howlin Ric & The Rocketeers
Howlin Ric the singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist presents a timeless blend of high-octane Rhythm ‘n’ Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll…with his full 5 piece vintage band. Howlin’ Ric & the Rocketeers have built up an explosive set of original music with material like “Take That Bottle” which would not sound out of place in the Sun Records Studio. Equally “Take My Hand” has all the Rhythm & Blues qualities of a Chess Records track. However the signature sound of Howlin’ Ric & the Rocketeers can be heard in the tracks “Cannonball” and “If I Didn’t Care” which the stylings of The Johnny Burnette Trio and Eddie Cochran along with a Little Richard inspired vocal performance.
