An unmissable and uplifting choral performance
Amble’s community choir, Harbour Lights, recently returned from London where they performed in ‘Sing for Water’ at the Thames Festival on 17 September.
The choir joined other choirs from around the country and Ireland to make up a massed choir of about 500 voices to sing seven ‘water themed’ songs at the the Scoop, in the shadow of Tower Bridge, on the South Bank.
Members of the choir were excited and proud to be taking part in the event, especially as one of the songs ‘Lights’ is about Amble and was written especially for Harbour Lights by Sarah Gray, the choir’s leader.
Sarah said “I am delighted that this song, written about Amble and for Amble’s community choir, has been shared by singers throughout the country and we were all so excited to be part of Sing for Water.”
This was an unmissable and uplifting outdoor choral performance led by the fantastic Katie Rose and Michael Harper and featured guest performances from the brilliant Mouthful from Gateshead and the fabulous Una May.
Sing for Water concerts are run by the charity WaterAid and have, so far, raised over £1 million for projects in India, Burkina Faso, Malawi, Ghana and now Ethiopia. It was co-founded by the Thames Festival Trust and composer, singer and musical director Helen Chadwick in 2002.
Harbour Lights members have raised over £1,500 through sponsorship for the charity.
The choir always welcomes new members. You don’t need to audition to join, just have enthusiasm for singing. We meet on Thursdays at 7.00pm in the Parish Hall, Dovecote St. Amble, during term time. Sessions last 1½ hours, first session free. If interested, call Carol on 01665 479476.
