Magna Carta weekend 12-14 June 2015
The striking red and gold flag of Baron John FitzRobert will soon be flying again over Warkworth, to mark the fact that preparations are well under way for what promises to be a rousing celebration of our heritage.
Starting on Friday evening June 12th there will be a Magna Carta Party for all the family at the Cricket Club. There will be hot roast pork sandwiches with all the trimmings, sausages for the children and live music to create a relaxing atmosphere. Tickets will cost £5 and £2 for the under-tens.
On Saturday June 13th , come down to St Lawrence churchyard to see craftsmen demonstrating a wide range of skills that date back to mediaeval times – a wheelwright, leather-worker, silversmith, pole-lathe wood-turner, spinner, basket-maker and weaver, amongst others.
Families take note: inside the church there will be craft activities for the children and a story-teller on hand to keep us spellbound with local tales. Take a few moments to watch the Drama Group perform a short play out of doors. All these activities are free of charge.
If by this time you are feeling like a cuppa and a scone, wander over to the URC Hall where you will find refreshments and an exhibition based around the facsimile of Magna Carta which has been given to the village. Here will also be displayed the entries for the school-children’s competitions, both art-work and written work. These will be submitted by Year 4 of the First Schools of Amble and Warkworth. Suitably refreshed, you may like to join a guided History Walk led by members of Warkworth History Society.
The day will be rounded off by a fantastic concert in the Memorial Hall, an evening of music and laughter, compered by Fred Calvert and organised by the Rotary Club of Amble and Warkworth
A special Service of Thanksgiving on Sunday June 14th at 3 pm will conclude the festivities: Sir Alan Beith will give the address and all are welcome to attend. Tea will be served afterwards.
