Luxury waterside development is finally launched
There will be 17 apartments in total; a mix of two and three bedrooms
After months of fine-tuning and planning consultations, work has begun on the Coble Quay development.
The £4m project, the brainchild of Amble Boat Company owner Nick Spurr and builder Tony Pull, consists of 17 apartments – all with wonderful views over the Marina and River Coquet – as well as office and retail space, together with onsite residents’ parking.
Plans were submitted back in February and project manager Tony is relieved that building work has now begun.
“It has been very frustrating,” he told The Ambler. “Northumberland County Council always liked the plans, but it’s been such a slow laborious process. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Still, that’s in the past and now we can move on.”

Part of Coquet Street will be closed in mid October to allow access by demolition equipment. Then work will begin on knocking down 12 and 14 Coquet St, which have been the boat yard offices for decades.
Nick admitted to a tinge of sadness when the time comes to knock down the offices. “I will be a bit sad to see them go,” he said, “there’s been a lot of history here. Amble Boat Company has been here for 20 years; before that, they were the offices for Marshall Branson Marine for six or seven years, and before that, the buildings were owned by the Bennett and Matthews families who owned Harrison’s Boatyard.”
The boatyard offices will be temporarily relocated to the Flowmill, until their new accommodation is complete. The move into the iconic wooden building which was created at the yard as part of the Olympic arts legacy, is met with stoicism by the staff. “It will be just like camping,” laughed office manager Anna Jobson, “we’ll survive!”
The Coquet St. offices will make way for the main entrance to the development, which consists of three blocks of apartments, and the retail and office space (see illustration below).

“The timber frame will start going up in early November,” said Tony, “the first block has two two-bedroom and one three-bedroom apartments. Two have already been reserved and we’ve had serious interest in the retail units.”
For the first release, apartments range between £250,000 and £375,000. Block one should be completed before Easter 2015.
