Eat local, learn locally: Culinary Institute opens doors in Amble
You may have seen a lot of activity in the Pride of Northumbria premises on Queen Street and it’s due to complete in mid October.
The premises will now be home to an artisan deli and a bespoke cookery school.
The training facility is an element of the Harbour Village project and is another example of partnership working between Northumberland County Council, Amble Development Trust, Amble Town Council, Northumberland College and Martin Charlton, chef/co-owner of The Old Boat House. Courses at the Culinary Institute of Northumbria will be available for students from mid October.
The deli will not only sell high quality local produce, but will also help to create a ‘real working environment’ for students.
Courses for all ages
The courses on offer through the Culinary Institute of Northumbria range from FREE Food Safety, Health and Safety, First Aid and Customer Service courses, to NVQ level 1 professional cookery qualifications & Professional Cookery Apprenticeship level 2/3, as well as a range of fun, one day weekend courses.
The Food Safety, Health and Safety, First Aid and Customer Service courses are open to everyone and you don’t need qualifications to apply.
The NVQ level 1 Professional Cooking qualification is the ideal starting point to gain practical catering skills and a good understanding of hospitality work, whether you’re still at school (aged 14+) or starting your first hospitality job. From studying food hygiene to cooking dishes, the fully funded City & Guilds NVQ Level 1 qualification in Food Preparation and Cooking could allow you to go on to work in a professional kitchen, hotel, restaurant or school or move on to further study. All NVQs are run over a period of 15 weeks and courses start from October 2014.
If you’re 16-19 and interested in catering but not sure which is the right course for you, the ‘Introduction to Food and Cookery’ class is FREE and the first class is on 14th October from 6pm-8pm.
There are also a number of single day courses available to anyone interested in developing their cooking skills or just learning something different with a group of friends. Courses include Italian Gastronomy, Breads and Bread Making, and Simply Fish to name just a few. These courses are chargeable and are run over one day on weekends.
