Build a boat and race it
New members to the club are very welcome
A new club is opening its doors to more members, with the promise of a unique combination of learning new skills, making new friends and, if you’re the competitive type, a chance to race against other like minded people.
Amble Coastal Rowing Club members have begun to build their own skiff, with the idea of racing other boats around the area. They are based in the Flow, next to Spurreli Ice Cream, an ideal and very central location for the club.
Club chairman Rob Angus is inviting new people to join the group. “We’re got about ten members at the moment, but we’re looking for more people to get involved. The club is open for anyone, you don’t have to have any experience. Tasks at the moment centre around woodworking, but ultimately anyone interested in fitness, racing, fundraising or social activities will be made most welcome.
“There is skilled work to do, so if there are any carpenters out there, let us know” said Rob “But let me stress that you don’t need to be skilled – sandpaper operatives are needed too!
The group have given themselves the target of building and hopefully launching their first skiff by Lifeboat Day (August Bank Holiday Sunday)
“This is a fun – no-pressure thing. Feel free to come and have a look around, ask questions. There’ll be absolutely no pressure to do anything if you don’t want to.
“There will be a competitive side to the club once the skiffs are finished and it’s time to race, but the bosts could be used for other uses, such as fishing.” said Rob.
The club is open to all ages, although under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
