Shining a light on more of Amble’s women this sporting summer

Posted on 23rd July 2024 | in Business News , Community

There are inspiring women everywhere in Amble! I’m delighted to have been asked to profile a few more of Amble’s female leaders since my last piece that celebrated female entrepreneurs for International Womens Day.

All three women I interviewed are leading with great success – and in beer and sporting industries that used to be dominated by men. They are all smart, practical and generous – putting the needs of the community at the heart of all that they do.

Louise Bould
Louise works with her partner to run Brewis Beer, Amble’s microbrewery – a little oasis on the Industrial Estate.

Louise Bould

Louise’s calm positivity is infectious and helps create the relaxed community feel that is evident when you step inside the Taproom which she runs with her team. As the customer-facing leader in the business, she wants to keep on top of trends to make sure everyone can enjoy the best experience, including the amazing street food from the city.

Of course it’s hard work running a business, but Louise loves the freedom and creativity leading brings to try out new things, as well as listening to what we customers want from beer, food, music, art, quizzes and events.

If sport isn’t your thing this summer, wander over with the kids and the dog to get away from it all. Or grab a takeaway to hunker down at home to cheer on the GB team.

When Louise wants to get away, you might find her at the new Hithe café which she loves, and taking family walks on the beach.

Stevie Anderson
Stevie is a leader of the Amble Netball Club along with her sisters, Joanne and Shelley, which was started by their pioneer Mum over 30 years ago.

Stevie Anderson

Stevie juggles many things as a volunteer leader of the club to give everyone in the community a chance to play, including herself and her family.

She loves all sport, but she has a heart for netball as it is more than just a sport, it is a chance to meet with friends, get healthy and switch off from all the pressures of normal life. And she has noticed over the years how it also gives players confidence, social skills and a space to find their voice.

The club is doing really well with two senior teams for those 14 years+ competing at league level across the county and there is a renewed interest from juniors which may lead to new opportunities to play at league level.

You may find Stevie taking five minutes out at the Coquet Tea Rooms to catch her breath.

So, if you are inspired to do something sporty this summer then why not join the netball club? Training is at JCSC sports hall on Thursdays from 5 September. Juniors 6.30-7.30pm adults 7.30-9pm.

Angie Thompson
Angie loves Amble! Having grown up in Shilbottle she chose to spend all her time in Amble as a teenager and hasn’t left. She knew Amble and its people were worth investing in, and so after years of working behind bars in the town she bought a pub on Queen Street which we know as Angie’s Tavern.

Angie Thompson

She has a heart for her customers which informs how she runs her business, and she doesn’t take them for granted. She wants to make sure everyone is welcome, and creates safe spaces at different times of day to meet different customer needs – from day time chats, sports leagues, Sunday lunches and dancing at the weekends for those who want to shake the week off.

Angie is a hands-on leader, working every day in the pub, sitting on sports league committees to make sure the teams can play matches, delivering Sunday lunches, and often moving furniture to make the pub work for the customers. She sees people and makes sure that her team are looked after to create a family atmosphere.

If you want to watch sport this summer and meet the local community – then go and find Angie at the Tavern at the bottom of Queen Street.

To relax, you’ll find Angie walking her dogs on the Braid, and to top up her energy and her vitamin D you’ll find her on a plane visiting friends overseas.
