A new Head has been appointed to James Calvert Spence College as the school undergoes a restructuring process.

James Andriot is the new Head of JCSC

James Andriot now joins the school after four years as Principal of Excelsior Academy in Newcastle. He said: “It is an honour and a privilege to be appointed as Headteacher of James Calvert Spence College, a school at the heart of its community.”

He added “One of my early priorities will be to plan carefully for the transition into the exciting new build.”

Executive Head Neil Rodgers left at the end of term, after nine years at the helm. Announcing his departure, Neil described “significant staffing changes due to a number of co-inciding events” in a letter to parents and carers.

In recent weeks the school has looked to recruite several new staff, including an Assistant Headteacher, Director of English, Director of Maths, Teacher of Maths, Head of Behaviour and Pastoral, Second in Humanities & Modern Foreign Languages, and is introducing a new post, Leader of Personal Development & Character Education. The role of Deputy Headteacher will replace the previous Head of School.

Mr Andriot begins his new role on 1 September 2024

The past few years have seen several significant changes for children attending JCSC; in September 2022 Northumberland County Council agreed to restructure schools in the Coquet Federation from three to two tier.

In November 2023, plans for a new building to house the Secondary school were agreed. Plans also included alterations to the building on South Avenue which is to house the Primary children and provide additional Special Educational Needs space for Barndale school, to be known as Barndale By The Sea.
