Award winning jeweller fulfilling her childhood dream
Congratulations to Martha Gothorp, who has won the FSB North East Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. Martha owns and runs Salt & Co, a beautiful shop next to Amble pier where she also has a small workshop creating her hand-made silver jewellery.
Martha has been selling her sterling silver pieces online for the last eight years, and opened the shop at the new Harbour Commissioners building in February 2022. From making little bracelets as a child, to opening her dream business, she says she always knew what she wanted to do in life.
She told The Ambler, “My family called me a magpie because I would always be looking at Mum’s jewellery, especially anything shiny!”
She now employs two people to help run the business, which allows her more time to be inspired by the local environment. “I collect shells from local beaches and cast them into sterling silver. Each one comes with a small card explaining how it was made and why it’s so special to the area. They are my favourite collection at the moment.”
However winning the Entrepreneur of the Year award from the Federation of Small Businesses came as a bit of a shock. Martha was interviewed in front of other people, an experience she found quite daunting. “I was a bit out of my comfort zone.”
Martha has no qualms about opening her shop in Amble, a place she says she has always loved. “Local people have been so supportive. I love coming to work each day. This is my childhood dream.”
Martha is busy creating her new collection, so now’s a good time to call in to see her latest pieces. You can see all her jewellery online too: www.saltandco.co.uk
She will now go forward to the national finals in Blackpool, on 9 May. Good luck!
