Heart-of-ChaosProfessional dancer Martin Hylton, has been working with Hilary Durie, Head of School at James Calvert Spence College, to introduce a new dance project, just for boys.

This project was created to primarily target and engage boys in contemporary dance, and a series of ‘in-school’ workshops commenced over three days.
“Young men across all year groups expressed an interest in the project from an early stage”, said Mrs Durie, “and the students proved to be very open-minded and interested in the idea.”

Martyn is an internationally renowned dancer and chorographer working with a wide range of dance companies and individuals and has taught contemporary dance throughout his career all over the world.

Year 8 boys were selected to work on this project, which was created around the theme of a boxing ring, with the students actually using the ring as their stage and prop.  After much hard work and commitment the three day workshop culminated in a performance in school followed by an evening show at Alnwick Playhouse.

In June the students travelled to Gateshead Civic Centre to perform in a celebration of work from Gateway Studio Project, “Dancin’ The Civic”, before a full audience, including parents and staff.

Chair of Governors Cllr Scott Dickinson said, “The performance was great, the students amazing and we are all very proud of them. Congratulations to all those involved, staff and students and thanks to the parents who have supported this event. The Year 8 boys were great ambassadors for our college and Northumberland, performing with young people and dancers from Gateshead and other areas.”
