Artists inspired by Grace exhibit work at RNLI museum
Local artists inspired by Grace Darling’s famous rescue 175 years ago are exhibiting their work at the RNLI Grace Darling Museum in Bamburgh from 26 May to 2 June.
Artists have found inspiration in Grace throughout the 175 years since the iconic rescue of nine survivors from the wreck of the SS Forfarshire. From the portraits of Grace painted by Henry Peterlee Parker and Grace’s brother Brooks to the various commemorative souvenirs produced by companies over the years, artists have represented Grace and the rescue in many different ways.
Virginia Mayes-Wright, manager of the RNLI Grace Darling Museum, said: ‘We have asked local artists to provide us with artistic representations of the rescue to mark its 175th anniversary this year. Our local artists have risen to the challenge, working not just in paint but textiles and print as well, and we are looking forward to a wonderful exhibition which should really capture the spirit of Grace and her remarkable achievement.’
The exhibition, called ‘Inspired by Grace’ runs from 26 May to 2 June and is part of the Festival of the North East. This is the first of two exhibitions under the same title with the summer exhibition focusing on collections not normally on view at the museum.
