The Highway Rat goes to school

highway-ratSome strange characters turned up at Amble Links First School one day in March to celebrate World Book Day. Pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters.

It was tremendous to see the children coming into a hall full of parents in a huge range of costumes and carrying the books that their chosen character was from. Many of the Foundation Stage children dressed up as characters from books by Julia Donaldson, one of their favourite authors.

Assembly was led by the Highway Rat assisted by an Oompa Loompa from the well-known Roald Dahl books! Children returned to their classrooms to spend the day completing a range of work linked to their chosen characters.

We also repeated the ‘Reading in Unusual Places’ photograph competition which we ran two years ago.  Entries included children reading on fishing boats, on a car roof, in the sea and whilst in a parrot cage! Cllr Robert Arckless chose his favourite entries and books were presented to these children.

We’re currently creating a story room in our Foundation Stage Unit to help the children develop a love of books and stories from an early age.  The room has been painted with book scenes by Joanne Howden, one of our parents, who spent many days on the task. This has really brightened up the space.

Following installation of new blinds, lighting and soft furnishings we hope that it will soon be fully in use and parents will be able to come into school on an even more regular basis to read stories with the children.
