Running in the family
Sibling rivalry played its part in the annual Druridge Bay 10K charity run on Sun 29 May when five members of the same family raced each other while raising money for the RNLI.
“My brothers and cousin ran in the first race in 2007 when it was held in memory of David Griffiths because we knew him,” said Ian Donaldson. “I was in Ireland at the time, but when I came back I knew I wanted to take part. This is the third time I’ve run it.”
Brothers Steven, Ian and Stuart Donaldson had trained throughout the year in readiness and together with Steven’s son Joe and cousin Steven Smith, the group set off determined each to get their best time.
Drama enfolded during the race when Ian slipped on some loose stones and skidded to the bottom of a hill.
“When I fell, my brother Steven was behind me” said Ian “He stopped to pick me up and although I was bleeding I got up and ran off leaving him behind! He was shocked at first but later he laughed about it. He said he thought at the time I was really badly injured. Later in the race he overtook me and beat me by four seconds!”
Family rivalry is still keen and though cousin Steven Smith is a dedicated runner, Ian says the others have been bitten by the running bug.
“We’ve got competitive amongst ourselves. I’m getting closer and closer to them now. I’m definitely taking part next year. In fact I’m taking part in the Sunderland 10K race at the end of June too, although at the moment I can really feel the after effects from my fall!”
